Suction swimming pool cleaners fit into three main categories in order of cost and effectiveness. There may be a few machines sharing some characteristics.

- Robot cleaners – These are by far the most expensive machines. After mapping your pool, they program themselves to vacuum the dirt by traveling over the remembered pool areas. Electrically driven on either wheels or tracks, they are quiet, self-contained rather large vacuum cleaners which need to be manually lifted out and emptied. The electronics and moving parts need to be professionally maintained but they are not all exposed to the dirty water. The filters need to be in good condition.
- Steered suction cleaners – There are a variety of these machine which fit into a mid-cost range. These machines have a turbine motor and gears which usually drive either wheels or tracks and an intermittent direction changing steering gear. They are quiet and the turbine is driven by the water flow taking the dirty water to the suction pump and filter. If maintained in good condition they perform well. The suction hose is vertical to the machine and connected centrally above it, it has little direct influence on the machine. Sometimes incorrectly referred to as robots these machines rely on the built-in steering gear to occasionally change course. Due to the highly abrasive dirt in the water passing through the many moving parts these machines require regular maintenance to perform optimally. This can become quite costly over time and often done by professional pool shops.
- Unsteered suction cleaners – These were the first generation of automatic pool cleaners; they are simple in design and consequently the least cost to purchase and maintain. Hence, these “Old School” machines have endured. Very early machines were rather noisy newer one not so. Nonetheless they are very effective and reliable machines. They are easily maintained by the owner. Driven by water flow through either a hammer or diaphragm action they sit directly on the pool and chug along a route determined mainly by the characteristics of the suction hose to which they are umbilical connected. Water and wind conditions also influence their behavior as does pool design. It is advisable to adjust hose length and weights for optimum performance. These machines are very beneficial but being unsteered their major drawback is their inability to clean more than about 70% of the pool and they are prone to getting stuck. However, it is now possible to buy easily fitted aftermarket steering accessories to convert these machines to steered machines. The most recent and again cost effective of these is the South African made “Random-MaXTM”. After converting an “Old School” pool cleaner to a steered machine the results are similar to those of the much more expensive steered cleaners in category 2. The inexpensive and durable “Random-MaXTM” has no turbines or gears to wear out and actually pays for itself through savings in electricity, maintenance and chemicals.
